We started the weekend off with a Meditation Workshop on Friday night. It was a really great evening, with some philosophy and Yoga Sutras discussion, and exploring many different ways to meditate. There are a lot of different meditation techniques because there are a lot of different people with different tendencies. You don’t have to master every technique. You want to pick one the works for you and use it to take you where you want to go. Many paths leading to the same destination. Thank you to everyone who came out for the workshop. It was a lot of fun to practice with all of you.
Congratulations to Andrew!
Congratulations to Andrew Oliver — another recent graduate of our Shiva Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Program! Andrew recently completed and handed in all of his post training required assignments. Last year, Andrew completed his 200 contact hours in our training at Baja Soul Yoga in Cabo San Lucas. Andrew is currently teaching at Yoga Remedy’s Essential Wellness in Los Angeles. If you are in the Southbay, Torrance, Harbor City area I would highly recommend his classes. Great job, Andrew! Proud of you! Namaste.
Fun Shiva Power class this morning at Baja Soul Yoga!
Yoga philosophy teaches us that yoga is the stopping of the movements of the fluctuating mind. When the mind is quiet — in stillness, we experience the true nature of our Self. When the mind is constantly moving and distracting us, we never really get to see who we are because we are caught up in all the movements, and all the distractions. It’s like things are upside down. The senses are leading the mind, and the mind is dragging us along for the ride. Yoga is the practice of taking charge again. You are directing your mind to control your senses, and focus on the things you want to focus on. Every time you concentrate on something and hold your focus — you increase your willpower. Every time your mind wanders off and fidgets, distracting you — the pattern of distraction gets stronger. The greatest battle you will ever fight is the one with your mind. Concentrate! Without concentration there is no yoga
Hip Opening Workshop this Saturday.
On Saturday we had a big hip opening workshop as part of our Shiva Yoga 50hr Intensive! We focus on the hips a lot in yoga. When we have full range of motion at the hip joint we can do a lot to prevent injuries to the low back and the knees. The hip is a ball and socket joint, which provides a lot of movement. We can move at the hips in all three planes. We can flex and extend the hips in the Sagittal plane. We can abduct and adduct the hips in the Coronal plane. And we can externally rotate and internally rotate the hips in the Transverse plane. If we have limited range of motion in the Saggital plane — then the low back could become compromised. The spine wasn’t meant to flex and extend the way the hips can flex and extend. Transverse plane. If we have limited range of motion in the Transverse plane, especially external rotation, then the knees can become compromised. The knee joint is a simple hinge joint. There a small degree of movement right to left at the knees but, mostly, this joint was meant to flex and extend. If your hips are not able to externally rotate, this can put a lot of pressure on the knees to try to make up for this lack of movement and this can lead to injury. Protect your low back and your knees, release stored tension and find balance, and prepare for seated pranayama and meditation practices. Some of the reasons it’s a good idea to open your hips! Great work on Saturday, everyone!!! Thank you for going into the fire with me.
Pranayama Workshop!
In Hatha Yoga — pranayama is used to balance the nervous system, bring clarity to the mind, and remove the veil of darkness that is covering the inner Light.
In Raja Yoga — pranayama is used to make the mind fit for concentration and is a preparation for meditation.
A very powerful evening working with the breath. Great job, everyone!
Some questions to consider: Why do we have two nostrils? Why would you want to predominantly breathe through the nose vs. the mouth?
This workshop kicked off a big weekend of Shiva Power classes, Shiva Meditation classes, and a Hip Opening and Arm Balancing Workshop! 🙏❤️Thank you to everyone who came to the workshop and thank you to Baja Soul Yoga for hosting. We have Asana Breakdown all week and then another big weekend coming up. Hope you can join us!
Happy Valentine's Day!
How open is your heart? How much love is flowing through you? Yoga philosophy teaches us that when we quiet the movements of the mind, and experience the deepest part of our Self — love, kindness, and compassion will flow through us and into the world. What kind of love is your love? Is it this love, kindness, and compassion, flowing through you to all those around you?
My teacher Dharma would say reverse engineer it. Maybe you’ve never experienced Samadhi, or you haven’t gone deep enough to experience your inner Light yet. Pretend you are already there. Practice being loving, kind, and compassionate. Be of service in the world to those around you. So much love for everyone who has touched my path. Grateful for each of you! Hope you have a wonderful day today and are letting your inner Light shine through and light up those around you. When the Light is flowing through you, you don’t need one special person, everyone is special, and everyone deserving of love. Namaste.
Congratulations Ashlee!
Congratulations to my student, Ashlee! Ashlee completed her 200hr Teacher Training with me, at Baja Soul Yoga, in Cabo San Lucas last year. Ashlee recently completed her post training assignments and has now officially graduated and is eligible to register with Yoga Alliance. Great job, Ashlee! Proud of you. Excited to see you begin your teaching journey. Namaste!
Sticking with Our Intentions!
How is your year going? Did you set any intentions this year? Did you make some resolutions? What is shifting for you? What are you working on shifting in your life? Remember, it’s a practice. You can set the intention and head down the path and it’s okay if it doesn’t work out, or if you fall or fail. Just get back up and try again. Our journey is always forward. Sometimes it’s little baby steps. Sometimes it’s two steps forward and one step back to steady ourselves. But it’s always forward.
Congrautations Kristin!
Congratulations to this wonderful yogi — Kristin Hughes! Who just completed her required post teacher training work and has officially graduated as a Shiva Yoga teacher. You rocked it, Kristin! So proud of you.

Something in the water...
There’s something in this Dubai water. Feels like I’m just floating and light as a feather! Thanks for the fun play session! Lol.
I posted this picture on social media and some people wondered if it was real. We had so much fun playing and creating this and other pics. The XYoga Dubai Festival had this booth set up with everything rotated 90 degrees, so you could do these really crazy and wild looking asana variations. You were lying down but when you take a picture and rotate the pic 90 degrees it looks like you are defying gravity. Pretty cool!
Either that, or maybe I have more siddhi powers than I often share. Lol.
Day 2 at XYoga Festival in Dubai!
First Day at Xyoga Dubai Festival!
What an incredible first day here at the XYoga Dubai Festival! Grateful to be here. Presenting along with some wonderful teachers including, Janet Stone, Davidji and Laura Sykora. I am loving the energy and receptiveness of the students. I taught my first Shiva Power® class. We did some pretty deep hip opening and I threw in a lot of fun advanced variations and a little bit of partner work. Thank you to everyone who came to this class. Day 2 I’ll be leading another Shiva Power® class at 8am and a very special Shiva Meditation® at 3pm. Can’t wait! Thank you XYoga Dubai for producing such a special event!
Dubai Eye 103.8!
I had the opportunity to be on a popular radio show today on Dubai Eye 103.8 today and got to share about yoga and my journey! The hosts were really wonderful, funny, and asked great questions. It felt so good to be able to share a lot of knowledge about yoga, the benefits of the practice, and share my own story and yoga journey. Grateful for the experience! I hope the interview inspired a few people to get on their mat and try yoga. It’s definitely changed my life in a number of positive ways.

Meet my new friend Jack.
My new friend! This is my buddy, Jack. I’m staying with him and his family here in Orlando this week. He’s a very special guy. Thank you, Jack, for opening your home to me. And thank you, Annette. It’s been such a pleasure being here. You are a very special and kind person. Grateful for you.
Jack is an old dog. He’s not very lovable sometimes. He doesn’t see very well and he doesn’t hear very well. So, he’s mostly in the dark. That must be a scary place to be. He gets startled a lot and he’s losing his mind a little too. A lot of the time Jack barks at you and growls. He doesn’t mean anything by it. He’s just scared. It must be scary to be in the dark.
I tried practicing lots of love and kindness and compassion towards Jack even when he wasn’t being very lovable. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. I think he opened up a little while I was staying with him and Annette.
Just because someone is angry with you and barks at you or growls at you it doesn’t mean you have to bark back them. You can still practice loving them and being kind and compassionate and maybe they will open up a little.
Handstand Workshop
We finished our week at Kula Yoga last night with a Handstand workshop! These Handstanders worked their butts off. Lots of Asana Breakdown, to better understand the work needed to find balance in the middle of the room. Lots of playful exercises to emphasize different muscles in the body and wake up areas that needed waking up. Lots of work on the core and the shoulders.
Handstands are advanced arm balances. They are great warm up poses for advanced students. They build strength in the shoulder stabilizer muscles and the core. They help students build confidence. And they are a lot of fun!
I had fun practicing with all of you last night. Next time I come back we are going to do the plank competition too! Lol.
Demonstrating Kukkutasana.
Demonstrating Kukkutasana in my Arm Balancing workshop yesterday at Guruv Yoga Dr. Phillips in Orlando! This is a challenging pose for me. I’ve been working with a shoulder injury the last two months and this was the first time in this pose in a while. I had a lot of fun playing with the students yesterday in our workshop. It was definitely a hot and sweaty one with lots of focus on the core, shoulders and the arms. A strong group came out and we were able to work on some challenging poses and advanced transitions. It was great to practice with you, everyone! You all did a great job! Look forward to seeing you again soon!
Last Shiva Power Class w/ Kula!
My last Shiva Power class at Kula Yoga, in New Smyrna, was yesterday morning. It was a little bittersweet. We had so much fun practicing together all week. I will miss practicing with this Kula Yoga crew. I’m leaving for Orlando today, sad to go, but also feeling very inspired by the community here in Port Orange and New Smyrna. This community reflects so well on Jodie and Jackie Anderson. You’ve created such a wonderful space here and attracted such a wonderful group of teachers and students. What a great group of yogis! I found everyone very open and receptive on this trip and it was so easy to teach your students all week. Thank you again for inviting me to come and share. Grateful for you both. Blessed that we have crossed paths and excited for the continued journey and future collaborations. Kula Yoga — I’ll see you in the fall. I’m back leading my 300hr Shiva Yoga Teacher Training which will be spread over September, October, and November. I look forward to seeing you then! I’m sure we will have some open classes and open up some of the workshops during the training too. It will be fun to practice with you all again. Namaste.
Kula All Dressed Up!
We had a really fun dinner on Saturday night! Nice to spend some time with this lovely Kula Yoga community. Fun to see everyone dressed up and not in yoga clothes too.
A Kula is a family. I feel like I have several yoga families right now and I love connecting with these families as much as I love connecting with my biological family.
We are in a time where the things in our life that are supposed to help us connect to each other are actually making us feel more lonely and alone. I think yoga and the communities we create around our yoga practice can really make up for this lack of connection we feel in our modern world and this lack of community that is disappearing from our lives.
Do you have a Kula? Do you feel connected? Come to a yoga class and you’ll meet a whole lot of people on the same journey that you are on. You might make some new friends, you might find a new partner, you might find the sense of community and belonging that you have been missing.
Thank you, Kula Yoga community for a fun night out!
